These fish along with a mix of stray hatchery steelhead from other rivers are in the John Day from October to early March. Fly fishing for steelhead on the John Day River can be very rewarding. All wild fish must be released unharmed. The John Day River is considered by many to be one of the best fisheries for smallmouth bass in the country. Depending on the year, March-November are productive months. The largest number of fish are typically caught in the summer.
